Lorem Ipsum traces back to a work by Cicero written in 45 BC called "De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum" (On the Ends of Good and Evil). A printer in the 1500s scrambled sections of this Latin text to create a type specimen book, and the resulting dummy text has been used ever since. It survived the shift to digital typesetting in the 1960s and remains the default placeholder text in design tools like Figma, Sketch, and Adobe InDesign.

When designing a layout, using real content can distract reviewers from evaluating the visual structure. Lorem Ipsum provides text with a natural distribution of letters and word lengths, so it closely mimics the appearance of real prose without being readable. This lets designers and clients focus on typography, spacing, and layout hierarchy. Once the design is approved, the placeholder text is replaced with actual content during development or content entry.

Use the paragraph option when filling large content areas like blog post templates, article pages, or content cards. Sentences work well for shorter elements such as descriptions, taglines, or preview snippets. The word count option gives you precise control when you need to test character limits or fit text into a specific space.
